Knocking down a piece of the ranch's history.

 I made a decison today that's been on my mind for a while.  The old building that we have called Casa 2, was planned for renovation to be a one bedroom and one bath guest casita.   After looking at the construction of the walls for these many months, I just decided that it wasn't good and wouldn't last, and that for the money it would cost to strengthen it, I could probably build a new casita for less money and have a better finished product.  The first photo is what it did look like for the past 60 or 70 years.

I had estimated that since the walls were almost 50cm thick that it might take a back hoe the better part of an afternoon to knock it down.  In the end, it was weak as I imagined and from start to finish, it was all in a big pile in about 20 minutes.

  As I've already told anyone reading this blog, my pueblo near the ranch, is Mayan.  I guess most pueblos in Yucatan are too.  Mayan in Yucatan are the indigenous people.  Many things in life in the pueblos go on today as it has for a 100 years or more.  There are still some pueblos here that are not on a road, but far off the roads, have no electricity or running water, no schools, and life exists today for the inhabitants as it did 300 years ago.     The pueblos offer many colorful traditions, that probably gringos would find "backward" or primitive.   It's fine with me.  I'm looking here for simple and peaceful, and Mayan living has helped to wean me off the steady-slow-IV-drip of consumerism I've lived with in the states for many, many years. Fresh pork ribs from the pueblo in Yucatan Mexico

  The Maya eat almost everything fresh.  They think frozen food tastes funny.  And many Maya families don't have a refrigerator anyway. All of the meat is cut fresh and beef and pork and chicken are readily available from one of three different vendors in the Pueblo 7 days a week.  They take a different day to slaughter so they don't compete with each other.  Beef is 130 pesos per kg.  Pork is 120 pesos per kg. and Chicken is about 100-110. However, most Maya families keep a pig or two in the back yard and multiple chickens for their own family consumption.  Salvador, my superintendent was slaughtering his pig Saturday night and on Monday morning brought me a kg of fresh pork ribs.   My price:  100 pesos!  About $5.20 USD or $2.52 USD per pound.   They were delicious and I guess would cost four times as much in the states? Note to self - 1.19.23 Transplanting Asparagus in Yucatan for retail sale

 Maybe a reader would be interested.  But I'm making this note to myself to refer to later. I planted 500 asparagus plants in mid August 2022 in two rows in my raised-garden-beds.  Each row had 3 rows of asparagus with about 75 plants per row.  September nothing.  October 19th, 60 days later, they popped up overnight.   A month later, on November 21, 2022 they were about 30 cm tall (12"). You can see them in the rows between the coconut trees I'm growing (for sale).  The coconut trees give the plants partial daytime shade from the very hot Yucatan sun. On November 21, 2022 I decided to pursue growing asparagus for a 2nd income stream.  To raise as potted plants to sell retail in Merida in 3 years to expats and nationals who would like to buy a mature plant and begin cutting spears from the plants immediately.  2 mature plants would provide a couple of small family enough asparagus for their own needs to eat it as often as they'd like....
