He said that he would do it, and he did, he did.

I always enjoyed that line, and song, in My Fair Lady.  The professor had claimed that, given some time, he would make a lady out of Audrey Hepburn's character, Eliza Doolittle, and get rid of her cockney accent.   Click here for the song and scene.

I grew asparagus years ago in Texas.  I loved growing it and made a lot of it from just 12 plants, for my family and many friends' families.  We gave away bags and bags of it every week.  And I wanted to grow in here in Yucatan.  But everyone I spoke to said that I would never get it to germinate in Yucatan soil.

I have been hoping to find some cash vegetable crops that I could grow on the ranch that would be labor intensive to give me a lot of work for the Mayan helpers I have.  And Asparagus is exactly that.  Which explains why it is so expensive at the grocery stores.

It's not a good idea to tell me something is not possible.  It just makes me more determined than ever to at least try and succeed, even at the risk of failure.

I planted 200 seeds almost 5 weeks ago.  And I made up a special mixture of fertilizer for the soil and have hoped, and watched, and watered, and waited.  Bull's blood, crushed up Milk of Magnesia tablets, cow manure, and urine.

Let me say here to you that 5 weeks is a long time to wait to see some progress.  But until today, I'd seen none.

However, today, they are coming up everywhere I planted them.   If my calculations are correct, and my memory for previously growing is correct, in 2 years, I'll make about 25 kilograms a day.  (55 pounds).  But in 3 years, I'll make almost 50 kilograms a day  (110 pounds a day).   Hallelujah!  My cash crop has begun.

You may look here and think these tiny little guys are planted far apart?  That's because Asparagus is basically a weed, and in a year, it will be about 4 inches in diameter and in 2 years about 6 inches.  In 4 or 5 years, the plants will fill up the bed completely.
